As part of the Shands Healthy Advantage program, UF board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Bruce Mast, M.D., FACS, will speak in the Villages on “Plastic Surgery: Facts and Fiction”

Physician rankings on U.S. News & World Reports’ web site show that Bruce Mast, M.D., chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery, is one of eight UF Department of Surgery faculty members among the nation’s “top doctors,” as determined by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., a well-known organization that rates health-care providers.

Mast; Kevin E. Behrns, M.D., chairman of the department of surgery and the Edward R. Woodward professor of surgery; Timothy C. Flynn, M.D., a professor of vascular surgery and an associate dean for the College of Medicine; Tomas D. Martin, M.D., a professor of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery; and Edward D. Staples, M.D., an associate professor of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, are ranked in the top one percent of physicians in their specialties nationwide.

Thomas S. Huber, M.D., Ph.D., a professor and chief of UF’s division of vascular surgery; David Mozingo, M.D., a professor of acute care surgery and anesthesiology and director of Shands Burn Center; and David W. Kays, M.D., an associate professor and chief of the division of pediatric surgery, are ranked in the top 10 percent of physicians in their specialties.

Dr. Bruce Mast, introduced as UF’s new chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery

The University of Florida Department of Surgery formally introduced its new Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Bruce A. Mast, M.D., during a reception held Dec. 15 at the Health Science Center.

Mast, who most recently worked in private practice in Gainesville, previously served as a UF assistant professor of surgery in the division of plastic and reconstructive surgery from 1995 to 2000.

He said he is excited to rejoin the university and that his vision is to “make UF a national leader in plastic surgery by taking the strengths of a world class academic medical center and combining them with the nuances of private practice surgery.”

Mast specializes in cosmetic surgical procedures, breast reconstruction and reduction, and skin cancer. He earned his medical degree from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ. He completed his general surgery training at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and his plastic and reconstructive residency at the University of Pittsburgh and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

He is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
